A semi-gantry crane is one type of crane that is mounted on a fixed pylon on one side and travels on wheels on rails on the other side. This particular construction of the system allows for shifting and transferring heavy loads from one area to the other. The amount of load that a semi-gantry crane can move is strictly dependent on the size and technology of the model that has been developed.

Normally, semi-gantry cranes are employed where there is not enough room for a complete Gantry crane, but there is a necessity to move heavy loads. In this manner, effective and economical use of space is achieved.

A semi-gantry crane resembles a gantry crane in appearance and function, but one arm is not supported on one side. Instead of this, the horizontal rail is not laid out on the floor but is fixed to a wall, pillars, or beam which are placed on the wall of the hall in the same manner as a bridge crane.

This design gives the semi-gantry crane more flexibility and enables greater reach than conventional gantry cranes.

Finally, this allows a semi-gantry crane to carry out work in places unreachable by a gantry crane.
